Tasting - "Beltrame Friulano 2009"

Name: Beltrame Friulano 2009
Variety:  Tocai Friulano
Region: Friuli
Country: Italy
Year: 2009
Regular Price: $15
Sale Price: $9.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Amanda/ 100% Tocai Friulano Straw-colored yellow with a pale green tint express an intense, delicately aromatic and floral bouquet. The flavor is dry, soft, slightly fruity, with slightly bitter nuance in its almond after taste, and suggestion of peach.
Your Review:  This white wine had a very crisp smooth feel to it, which is what I look for in white wines. The smell matched the taste of  fruity flavors with a lemony base. This wine would compliment any hors d'oeuvres because of its soft and smooth complication, and a white wine that is hard to hate. If your looking to get overwhelmed by flavors this is not the wine for you.

Tasting - "Mas LLunes Maragda 2010"

Name: Mas LLunes Maragda 2010
Variety: Grenache Blanc
Region: Emporada
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Regular Price: $16

Shop/wine critic/ winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Amanda/ This Grenache Blanc is exquisitely sculpted with sharp acids and pinpointed minerals, and offers orange, melon and vanilla-honey flavors. A delight to drink, at a great price.
Your Review: This white wine was a very bright colored, but dry wine once it hit your palate. This wine went down pretty smoothly, but had very dull/nonexistent flavors. The flavors I could taste was a hint of apple that was very small but crisp, which was one of the more appealing features of the wine.

Regular Price: $20
Sale Price: $9.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ This wine is intricate with the delicate perfumes of white flower blossoms, profound tropical fruit sweetness, and energized by citrus nectar.

Tasting - 'Neu Direction Cabernet Sauvignon 2010"

Name: Neu Direction Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Regular Price: $15
Sales Price: $7.95
Shop/wine critic/ winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ This Cabernet Sauvignon shows very good purity of fruit and skillful wine making. This wine is full of black-fruit aromas, depth, and style. The palate pushes ripe plum and berry fruit along with chocolate, and the finish is chewy and correct in terms of tannins and structure.
Your Review: This is easily one of the most interesting red wines I have ever had due to its unique quality once you swallow the wine. This wine took my mouth by storm absorbing all the saliva and making my mouth really dry, which was really surprising. The tannins were some of the strongest ones I have ever drank, which was a unique characteristic of this wine. The smell was very berry like, and would probably compliment a very juicy food like steak.

Tasting - " Champteloup Pinot Noir 2011 Loire Valley"

Name: Champteloup Pinot Noir 2011 Loire Valley
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Loire
Country: France
Year: 2011
Regular Price: $15
Sales Price: $7.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ Although it produces vast amounts of well-priced fresh, mostly white wines, lovely reds like are broadening Touraine's appeal. This wine may seem familiar to you. It is a sibling of the Touraine Sauvignon Blanc we've offered for years. Bright cherry and strawberry fruits are followed by a soft smooth palate.
Your Review: This was a surprisingly delicious red wine with a smooth and exotic taste with a distinct smell of some sort of berries. The smell matched the taste so it was a pleasant experience because you knew exactly what you were going to taste. This wine had significantly less tannins  and wasn't as dry as other traditional red wines.

Variety: Riesling Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris
Region: Alsace
Country: France
Year: 2012
Regular Price: $17
Sales Price: $9.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ This white wine had a delicious and fresh blend of multiple grapes. Light aromas of fresh fruit and delicate white flowers start your journey, followed by crisp flavors of stone and citrus fruit. A well balanced acidity on the dry finish ends this French blend beautifully.
Your Review: This white wine instantly became familiar when I first smelled a Trix aroma that brought be back to one of my favorite cereal. As soon as I smelled this white wine I became excited to taste it to see if it had a similar taste. It was a very smooth wine that had a little tart sensation at the end. I could not put a fruity taste to this wine, which tripped me up, but still was very delicious.

Variety: Garganega
Region: Soave
Country: Italy
Year: 2010

Your Review: One of the smoothest white wines with a distinct smell of pears and a hint of flowery aroma. This wine had a smooth transition from the smell to the taste buds, and I really enjoyed the whole experience from top to bottom.

Tasting - "Shotfire Cabernet/Shiraz Barossa 2010"

Name: Shotfire Cabernet/Shiraz Barossa 2010
Variety: 56 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Shiraz
Region: South Australia
Country: Australia
Year: 2010
Price: $17.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ A whopper of a wine, it is deep ruby/purple and possesses loads of glycerin and full body along with stunning notes of wood spice, graphite, blackberry, and pepper. Rich, chewy, and dense, in a typically bold, exuberant Aussie style, this is a wine to drink over the next 6-10 years.
Your Review: This big ruby red Australia wine had an overwhelming aftertaste and smell of dark berries. Another red wine that was just to strong to compliment any food and not one of my favorite wines. After drinking another red wine this makes me think my palate is only meant to enjoy white wines.

Tasting - " Odoardi Savuto 2006"

Name: Odoardi Savuto 2006
Variety: Aglianico
Region: Calabria
Country: Italy
Year: 2006
Original Price: $18
Sales Price: $9.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ A beefy, herb-tinged red, sporting dense layers of plum sauce, grilled fig and currant paste, stacked with notes of roasted game, rosemary and hummus. The finish lingers, despite noticeable tannins.
Your Review: This was a very bitter, strong, overwhelmingly plum flavor that left a powerful impression on my tongue and nose. When I smelled the wine it raised my nose hairs and made me shake. Another aspect of this wine was how heavy it was on the stomach, which was a unique feature of this wine.

Tasting - "Willm Alsace Grand Cru Riesling Kirchberg de Barr 2011"

Name: Willm Alsace Grand Cru Riesling Kirchberg de Barr 2011
Variety: 100% Riesling
Region: Alsace
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $20.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ With a great intensity and structure, this is a wine that all texture and potential. It's expressive with white fruits and perfume, but there's richness that's still to come. Drink from 2016 and see how the minerality and acidity will come into balance.
Your Review: This was a very deceiving wine with a sweat smell but a very blandish and bitter taste. This was a very tricky wine to put a flavor on it but it had a hint of pear which was even hard to distinguish.

Tasting - "Jesus Diaz Blanco Vinps de Madrid"

Name: Jesus Diaz Blanco Vinos de Madrid
Variety: Malvar
Region: Madrid
Country: Spain
Year: N/A
Original Price: $15
Sale Price: $8.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Wine Cellar/ Courtney/ Zesty acidity and tropical fruit make this obscure buy a great food wine.
Your Review: This Spanish white wine  had a very pungent juicy fruity taste like a pear with hints of an earthy taste such as an oak. This wine had a very weak after taste so it was one of the less memorable white wines that I have tasted. This wine would have to go with food to compliment its weak finish.

Tasting - "Dibon Cava Brut Reserva"

Name: Dibon Cava Brut Reserva
Variety: Macebeo, Parellada
Region: Penedes
Country: Spain
Year: N/A
Price: $9.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar/ Courtney/ White wine with white apple aromas are elegant and not over the top, while the tangerine and orange flavors area lean and focused. This is a light framed Cava with a clean, fast, tasty profile and finish.
Your Review: This was a very interesting white wine that takes your palate by storm. This is a really dry wine that was very tart and tingly. The flavors that came to mind was a hint of apple, and a very resounding tangerine and orangy taste. This white wine was not one of my all time favorites but a favorable wine that would bold well with a marinated steak or chicken.

Country: Australia
Year: N/A
Price: $7.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar/ Amanda/ This is a tasty and generous Moscato that opens with push aromas of honey, peach syrup, white flower and fragrant exotic fruit. There's a nice sensation of fullness and creaminess in the mouth that is backed by the foamy effervescence of this sparkling desert wine.
Your Review: This wonderful white wine, as of right now, is one of my all time favorite wines that I have had this semester. Its mesmerizing teal and green color matches its very fruity and tropical aroma and taste. When this white wine hit my tongue a certain tingly feeling immediately consumed my mouth. This great sensation was also followed by a smooth, delicious after taste that ended the wine. I really enjoyed everything this wine had to offer. DELICIOUS !!!

The aroma consist of red fruits, plum, and cherry jam. On the palate it's juicy  and intense wood-like tannins that make it a rustic yet versatile wine.
Your Review: This was by far my favorite red wine that I have tried thus far due to its smooth texture and aftertaste. The wine still had a little bitter feel to it but not nearly as much as other traditional red wines. I could smell and taste the berry flavors, along with a bit of oak/ wood taste. Again this was the best red wine I have tasted this semester thus far.

It exhibits very fresh, ripe dark red fruit with very good palate weight and ends with rich fruit notes. Made organically grown grapes.
Your Review: This red wine  was a very dry, bitter, and tart red wine that exhibited a very cranberry smell and taste. Also I could taste a little oak taste when this ruby red wine hit my tongue.

Tasting - "The Royal Old Vines Chenin Blanc 2012"

Name: The Royal Old Vines Chenin Blanc 2012
Variety: Chenin Blanc
Region: N/A
Country: South Africa
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar/Amanda/ "One of the greatest buys I have tasted this year is this under $10, 100% Chenin Blanc from the Western Cape. A super flowery-scented nose includes notions of ripe honeydew melons and pears. This is a medium weight, fresh, fruity, crisp, dry Chenin Blanc.
Your Review: This was a white wine that was very fruity in smell and taste along with a sour aftertaste. I could defiantly pick out the pear taste, but it had a weak impression on the palate. This white wine was not one of my favorites, but would go great with a soft appetizer meal because its medium and watery taste.

Tasting - "Norton Sauvignon Blanc 2012"

Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar/ Amanda/ White wine with aromas of pithy citrus and pineapple with flavors of tangerine and pineapple are tropical, and zesty.
Your Review: This white wine was very citrus in its smell and taste. I could not put my finger on the exact fruit that it tasted like, but I sort of tasted an orange like taste that was very tart and sour. This wine was not one of my all time favorites, but bearable in its after taste and punch.

Wine Dinner #1 -"Tyler Smalls Apartment (classic dinner)"

The first wine/ food dinner was held on Thursday January 30, 2014 with a group of friends (Conner, Blake, Tyler,Ben, and Carrick) that brought 3 white wines that included Rockbridge Virginia St. Mary's Blanc, Franz Wilhelm Langguth Erben Spätlese, Barboursville Vineyards Carbernet Blanc served with steak, chicken with Caribbean Jerk seasoning, cheese and crackers, and white rice. We opened up this event with popping all 3 bottles of wine with a handheld corkscrew bottle opener, each getting a turn to attempt to open it. The first white wine that was opened and tasted was the Rockbridge Virginia St. Mary's Blanc 2002, which had the highest percentage of alcohol, 13%. This wine was very tangy, bitter, and provided a strong after taste. This wine tingled the taste buds with green apples, and a hint of pineapple, so a very tropical wine to say the least.  This also carried over when the wine was being smelled, which gave off a very tropical smell, but more so overpowered by the pineapple aroma. In my opinion out of all the food we had this wine didn't pair well with any of the food that was prepared, and was the last bottle that was completely gone at the end of our wine/food dinner. This wine overpowered the appetizers and the main meal thus not being the wine of choice for anyone that was at the dinner. The next wine that was tasted was the Franz Wilhelm Langguth Erben Spätlese. This too was a white wine and a crowd favorite among everyone there. After I swirled the wine and began to sniff and could not quite put a specific smell on this wine except for a strong fruity aroma. When this white wine was washed back and forth in my mouth and swallowed a tangy peach and green apple taste was the two flavors that came to mind. Unlike the last wine this wine paired great with the chicken, but even better with the steak and ranch combo. It complimented the tough texture of the steak with a nice smooth after taste. Since this had a smooth aftertaste this was easy to eat with the cheese and crackers before the main meal, and made for a better dinner experience since it complicated all aspects of the dinner. Lastly was the Barboursville Vineyards Carbernet Blanc which had a tangy and tart aftertaste. The slight taste of strawberries was the only flavor I could put my finger on, but that was even hard to pick out. The smell that was most potent was a fruity like smell mixed with a flower like scent. This wine paired well with the chicken and rice combination because the chicken was excessively covered with the Caribbean Jerk spices so it was left with a real hot and spicy taste, which was killed by the bitter after taste that the spicy mixed chicken and rice gave off. This experience sparked endless conversation between everyone that was there such as what they tasted to what the smelled, and what everyone wanted to try for our next dinner/ food event.

Tasting - "Weinkeller Erbach Flonheimer Adelberg Sylvaner"

Name: Weinkeller Erbach Flonheimer Adelberg Sylvaner
Variety: Sylvaner
Region: Rheinhessen
Country: Germany
Year: 2010
Regular Price: $18
Sale Price: $4.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar: The fruity mouthwatering white wine has smells of a floral bouquet and yellow fruit, and tastes of lemon fruit. The finish is zippy and refreshing and comes in a liter bottle.
Your Review: This white wine was one of my more favorable wines because of its price and green apple taste. It also has a tangy, tart taste but not as impactful as the red wines. This was the only wine that had crystals that accumulated at the bottom of the bottle, which impacted its price, but not the taste of it. This was the only wine that I purchased at the end of the tasting.

Tasting - "Montebeuna Rioja"

Name: Montebuena Rioja
Variety: 100% Tempranillo
Region: Rioja
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $8.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar: Vivid ruby red wine with smells and tastes of cheery and blackcurrant. This is a red wine that finishes smooth and sweet.
Your Review: The second red wine that was tasted, which again was not one of my favorites because of the tangy and tartness that was tasted. An overwhelming taste of cherry rushed to my taste buds and dryness to the mouth. This would have been a more enjoyable wine with steaks or heavier meats.

Tasting - " Delaroche Cotes du Rhone"

Name: Delaroche Cotes du Rhone
Variety: Blended 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre
Region: Rhone Valley
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $8.95
Shop/ wine critic/ winery review: Vintage Cellar: This was the first semi-opaque ruby that was tasted. It exhibited very fresh, ripe dark red fruit with rich fruits blended together. This wine was made from organically grown grapes.
Your Review:  This was the first red wine that was tasted and probably one of my least favorites because of its tartness and heavy nature. It had a tangy sensation at the end of the wine, which reduced its appeal to me. This wine was recommended with food, which was not available during the tasting and could have made it more enjoyable.

Tasting - "Maipe Torrontes"

Name: Maipe Torrontes
Variety: Torrontes
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2013
Price: $7.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar: The tastes that this wine possess are a variety of fruity flavors of fresh white peaches, pears, green apple, green melon with smells of rose petals  and jasmine. This wine goes great with smoked meats, and spicy foods.
Your Review: This wine had similar smells to a fruity beer, like blue moon. It was a very sour white wine with citrus  tastes of mostly oranges. This was one of the more enjoyable wines but it closely mirrored one of my all time favorite beers.

Tasting - "Cortenova Pinot Grigio"

Name: Cortenova Pinot Grigio
Variety: Pinto Grigio
Region: Venezie
Country: Italy
Year: 2012
Price:  $7.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Vintage Cellar: White wine that smells like fresh and floral bouquet with tastes that include pears, apricots, and bananas.

Personal Tasting Experience: This wine was a nice smooth white wine with a strong fruity smell/taste. When I swished it in my mouth I tasted an overwhelming pear taste. This white wine doesn't need food to go along with because of the smoothness, but would go well with hors' d'oeuvres like cheese and crackers. One of my more favorable wines out of the 5 wines that I tasted
